Fika Spice Began as a Gift — And Maybe That’s Why We Love Giving It
Some of the best gifts aren't the things we go looking for.
They’re the things we already love so much that we can’t help but share them.
That’s really how Fika Spice began.
Long before there were Fika Spice bottles, a website, retailers, markets, or even the thought of starting a spice company, there was simply a blend of spices our family loved.
For more than 30 years, we had been adding spices to our morning coffee. It was part of our routine—something simple and delicious that made an ordinary cup of coffee feel a little more special.
Then our family started changing very quickly.
All four of our children got married within about 18 months.
Suddenly, our family was growing. There were new sons- and daughters-in-law, new families becoming connected with ours, new traditions, new holidays and a lot to celebrate.
That Christmas, we wanted to give our new family members something personal.
Not something expensive.
Not something complicated.
Just something that came from our family.
So we mixed up the spice blend we had been using for years, put it into packages with a cute homemade label and gave it away as a Christmas gift.
We weren’t starting a business.
We were giving away something we loved.
And then people started tasting it.
“This is amazing.”
“What do you do with it?”
“You really have to make more and sell this.”
“Our friends want to get some.”
Those conversations kept happening.
People began asking about using it in coffee. Coffee shops became interested. Other people wanted some. What began as a family Christmas gift slowly became something much bigger than we had expected.

There’s something we enjoy about the fact that Fika Spice didn’t begin with a business plan, it began because of the people we love.
We had something that brought enjoyment to our family, and we wanted other people we cared about to have it too.
In many ways, that is still what Fika Spice is about.
Today our family has grown again. We now have three grandchildren, with another on the way.
Life keeps changing.
Families grow. Children get married. Babies arrive. Friends move away. New neighbors move in. Someone hosts you for dinner. Someone helps when you need it. Someone has a birthday. Someone is having a difficult week.
Sometimes you know change is coming.
Sometimes it happens when you least expect it.
And somewhere along the way, the spice we once gave as a Christmas present became a family business we love.
We think a good gift should do more than take up space.
It should be enjoyed.

Our Original Fika Spice is a Scandinavian-inspired blend of nine premium plant-based spices:
Ceylon cinnamon, cocoa, Madagascar vanilla bean powder, ginger, nutmeg, turmeric, cardamom, cayenne and clove.
Maple Sugar Fika Spice adds Wisconsin maple sugar for a naturally sweet maple version of the blend.
That makes Fika Spice an especially fun gift because people usually have the same first reaction our family did:

Now Fika Spice has taken us to farmers markets, stores, coffee shops and communities throughout Wisconsin and beyond. We’ve met people we otherwise never would have met. We’ve watched customers discover new ways to use it. We’ve seen bottles purchased for birthdays, holidays, hosts, family members and friends.
What started as our gift to others has become an unexpected gift back to us.
And perhaps that’s one of the nicest things about giving.
